What You'll Need

This simple demonstration can be used to show students how much harmful tar and residual chemicals are left in cigarette smoke after it has passed though a cigarette's filter. This illustrates the fact that there is no safe cigarette; you can try this demo with any kind of cigarette (lights, ultra-lights, etc) with similar results across the board.

1. One filtered cigarette.

2. Clear tape.

3. Cotton ball or pads (use the cotton fluff on the inside).

4. Bamboo skewer or knitting needle.

5. Scissors.

6. A plastic drinking straw.

7. A small glass of water.
